Scholarships
2025-2026 CUNY School of Medicine Scholarships
The Office of Student Affairs is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2025-26 academic year for all students. Applications must be submitted by Sunday June 23rd, 2025 at 11:59pm. Applicants will be notified of their award status via email in the weeks following the close of the application. Students are encouraged to apply for all scholarships available to their academic cohort.
Please be advised that, unless otherwise stated, all scholarships can be applied to tuition only. If you are or expect to be a recipient of federal or state financial aid (TAP, PELL, Excelsior, etc.) for full or partial tuition, you might not be awarded any/all of the scholarship funds, as the school is not allowed to over-award financial aid.
All applicants must be enrolled full-time in the CUNY School of Medicine 7-year BS/MD program for the 2025-26 academic year, and must currently be in good academic standing.

Medical Student Awards
Dr. Leonard and Barbara Steinfeld Pre-Med Fund Award – $5,000 – U2 + U3
The purpose of this award is to reduce the burden of tuition on a student with significant financial need.
Primary Care Award – $20,000 – M4
The mission of the CUNY School of Medicine is to graduate broadly educated, highly skilled medical practitioners to provide quality healthcare to communities historically underserved by primary care practitioners. Applicants must be M4 students who are applying only to residency programs in primary care disciplines.
The Dr. Robert Carras (’50) and Irmgard Carras, Ph.D. Endowed Fund Award – $11,000 – M1-M4
Medical students, regardless of race or gender, will be selected from a qualified application pool, based on economic need and scholastic achievement.
Jack and Libby Sonkin Scholarship – $7,500 – M1
This award, established by Jack and Libby Sonkin, recognizes a student with financial need, who exhibits outstanding evidence of scholarship and leadership.
Efim and Mila Popovitz Scholarship – $6,000 – M3 or M4
This award is for 3rd or 4th-year medical students with outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. To complete your application for this award, you must send a short essay and secure two faculty letters of recommendation, and have them sent to scholarships@med.cuny.edu.
The Dr. Serge Jean Scholarship – $5,000 – M1-M4
The purpose of this award is to reduce the burden of tuition on a student with significant financial need and academic merit.
The Rebecca Lea Steckel Scholarship – $5,000 – M4
This award is for medical students who are planning on applying to residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Ob/Gyn.
40th Anniversary Biomedical Endowed Fund Scholarship – $4,500 – M1-M3
A group of dedicated alumni established the 40th Anniversary Biomedical Endowed Fund following the 40th anniversary of their graduation. These highly competitive scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need with consideration of academic merit and research activities.
Sunita Babbar Singh Memorial Scholarship – $4,489 – M1-M4
This scholarship is intended to support female-identifying students with demonstrated financial need, who have a commitment to supporting the healthcare needs of medically under-resourced communities.
Bernard and Susan Mendik Award – $3,200 – M1 and M2
This scholarship, established by Bernard Mendik, is intended to support students with financial need who have worked during medical school. Any student from the five boroughs may apply, but preference is given to students who are from the South Bronx or The Bronx.
Dr. Constance M. Silver and Bernice & Harold S. Kahn Scholarship – $1,281 – M1 – M4
The purpose of this award is to reduce the burden of tuition on a student with significant financial need and academic merit.
Dean’s Humanism Award – $500 – M1-M4
This award is for medical students who exhibit humanism, advocacy, and service that is consistent with the mission of the CUNY School of Medicine. Awardees will be medical students who exemplify the qualities of excellent Healers, Leaders, and Scholars.
Undergraduate Awards

Victor and Myrna Weingarten Scholarship – $4,834 – U3
This award is intended to support a third-year undergraduate student in the CUNY Med 7-year BS/MD program with significant academic achievement and an interest in research.
Goldman Fund Scholarship – $4,803 – U2 + U3
This award is intended to support a needy and deserving undergraduate student in biomedical science.
Lois Pope/Life Foundation Scholarship – $1,563 – U2 + U3
The purpose of this award is to help cover the cost of tuition and books.
Abraham and Miriam Mazur Endowment Scholarship – $1,135 – U2 + U3
The purpose of this award is to recognize a student with exceptional promise in science, in memory of Dr. Abraham Mazur, Class of 1932.
Rose A. Lahman Scholarship – $1,122 – U2 + U3
This award is meant to support an undergraduate student in the 7-year BS/MD program with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who is interested in giving back to the community, coming from a group underrepresented in medicine, and with demonstrated financial need.SECTION

- National Medical Fellowships (NMF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minority physicians and other professionals in the healthcare workforce in order to improve access to quality healthcare in communities with persistent care shortages.
- PA Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that promotes better health and wellness by providing PAs and PA students with philanthropic opportunities and resources.
- The American Medical Association (AMA) offers several fellowships and scholarships for medical students.
