A Comprehensive Approach to Building a Diverse and Mission-Driven Student Body

At the CUNY School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program, we believe that academic metrics alone do not define a candidate’s potential. Through a holistic admissions process, we assess applicants as whole individuals—considering not only their achievements, but also their preparation, character, and alignment with our mission to serve communities where care is most needed.

What We Evaluate

The admissions committee carefully considers the following components in each application:

  • Strength and rigor of undergraduate coursework
  • Overall academic achievement and GPA trends
  • Direct patient care experience
  • Employment in healthcare or related fields
  • Shadowing hours
  • Volunteering, especially in communities most in need of care
  • Quality and insightfulness of recommendations
  • Evidence of professionalism, maturity, and leadership
  • Originality, clarity, and writing quality
  • Insight into motivation, goals, and understanding of the PA profession
  • Demonstrated alignment with the program’s commitment to primary care and broad access to community-focused service

Please note: Selection decisions are based solely on academic preparation, qualifications, and readiness for the program.

Interview Process

Applicants with the highest overall rankings are invited to an in-person interview, which assesses:

  • Deductive reasoning
  • Professionalism and interpersonal skills
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Continued alignment with program values and mission

Final admissions decisions are based on a comprehensive review of all application components, including interview performance. The most competitive candidates who meet all academic and admissions criteria are offered a seat in the program.
