Mission Meets Medicine

CUNY School of Medicine became a full MD granting medical school, fulfilling our dual mission of making medical education more broadly available to students from backgrounds with historically low participation in medicine, and helping to train doctors to serve in healthcare professional shortage areas.

The School’s mission builds upon the groundbreaking accelerated BS MD program of our renowned Sophie Davis School for Biomedical Education established in 1973. Located in Harlem, we are the only public medical school in Manhattan, and the first to open in New York City since 1860.

The Heart of a Community

Located in the vibrant heart of Harlem, the CUNY School of Medicine is more than a medical institution—it’s a deeply rooted part of a community rich in culture, resilience, and history.

Our mission reflects the spirit of Harlem itself: forward-looking, community-focused, and committed to measurable improvement. Located on the historic campus of The City College of New York, we have built a legacy of training future physicians from a wide range of backgrounds who are prepared to address healthcare access challenges and practice in communities with persistent care shortages.
