Our students work alongside experienced investigators on projects in behavioral clinical, and translational health research, and gain valuable skills and insights into healthcare research

Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Summer Research Fellowship in Urology

This Summer Research Fellowship in Urology is a memorial program named after Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji, a beloved Columbia medical student and an aspiring urologist. The awarded student will be paired with a member of our faculty to participate in a clinical research project and gain exposure to the field of urology. This scholarship is being offered in Dr. Onyeji’s honor with the hope that this experience will inspire and support students toward a career in urology. This summer program is at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center Department of Urology.

Columbia Division of Cardiology Summer Scholar Research Program

The Columbia Cardiology Summer Scholar Research Program is designed to support talented minority and disadvantaged students interested in cardiology. This scholarship will provide motivated students from underrepresented groups with exposure to biomedical research and an opportunity for longer-term mentorship toward a career in cardiology.

Columbia University Medical Center Visiting Scholar in Rheumatology Program (VSIRP)

The Visiting Scholar in Rheumatology Program (VSIRP) will provide CUNY School of Medicine M1 students the opportunity to obtain in-person clinical and research exposure for 6 weeks (mid-June through late July) in the Division of Rheumatology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.SECTION

Mount Sinai Short-Term Training Program in Health Disparities Research

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) offers a Short-Term Training Program in Health Disparities Research to support talented minority and disadvantaged students interested in becoming physician-scientists. SECTION

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Program

The program aims to assist medical students in reaching their goals of a full-time summer of research training and related career development activities in diabetes, endocrinology, obesity, nutrition, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, kidney and urologic diseases, and benign hematologic diseases. Awarded CUNY School of Medicine, students will be full members of this National Institutes of Diabetes Digestive Diseases program.

St Barnabas Hospital Programs

The Saint Barnabas Hospital (SBH) Volunteer Summer Program provides interested CUNY School of Medicine students with the opportunity to obtain in-person clinical and research experience in the Orthopedic, Vascular, and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery fields.SECTION

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Track of Distinction in Research

CUNY MED MD with Honors in Research Track of Distinction

The Track of Distinction in Research recognizes the excellence of graduating MD students participating in basic, behavioral, clinical, or translational science research while enrolled at The CUNY School of Medicine. Applicants who complete the Track of Distinction requirements will be recognized at the CUNY School of Medicine MD graduation ceremony.

Tracks available to qualified graduating MD students:

Track A – Under the supervision of a research mentor, applicants will complete a single longitudinal project beginning in the M1 year and culminating in the M4 year with a capstone paper submitted as a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. 

Track B – Under the supervision of a research mentor, applicants will complete a cohort of distinct research projects focused on a single health-related area (e.g., internal medicine, HIV), beginning in the M1 year and culminating in the M4 year with the presentation of a capstone project at the Spring Research Symposium. 

Track C – M4 Applicants will publish at least five (5) papers in peer-reviewed journals and present a poster at student research day or a professional conference.

Student Research Conference Travel Support

CUNY MED Student Research Conference Travel Support

The CUNY School of Medicine provides poster printing and travel stipends for students who are accepted as presenters at professional research conferences. Students in good academic standing who are accepted as presenters are eligible to request poster printing free of charge. Accepted presenters can request financial support to cover travel and registration fees through the CUNY MED travel stipend fund.
