Physician Assistant Students Provide Health Screenings at Harlem Back-to-School Event

Fifteen students from the CUNY School of Medicine’s MS in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program played an essential role at a Harlem back-to-school event, offering health screenings and education to more than 80 residents. Held outside the Henry Brooks Senior Housing on West 154th Street, the students conducted blood pressure and blood sugar checks while educating attendees about healthy ranges and when to seek medical care.

The event, organized by Steven Robinson, DMSc, RPAC, a 1981 PA program alumnus, was a vibrant community gathering. In addition to health services, the day featured a DJ spinning music, various food options, voter registration, resources from local nonprofit organizations, and a book bag and school supply giveaway for students.

The student-run PA Club organized the participation of students from the Classes of 2026 and 2027, marking the first time that CUNY Medicine joined the event. It was such a success that the club has already been invited to provide health services at an upcoming food drive on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 1 pm to 3 pm, also at Henry Brooks Senior Housing. This event is one of several, including a breakfast on Oct. 9, that the club has planned for National PA Week, which runs from October 6 to 12.

We’re proud to have contributed to the well-being of Harlem residents while fostering health awareness,” said Jazmine Francis, PA Class of 2026, and President of the Physician Assistant Student Society. “It was a great opportunity to give back, connect with the community, and enjoy the afternoon before the rain arrived!”
