Advancing Health Professions Education Innovation and Scholarship Lab is focused on the education of health care professionals. We are a multidisciplinary research group concentrating on linking health professions education with patient, systems and community important outcomes. We work collaboratively to transform health professions education, assessment, feedback, and learning and support the career development of health professions educators through mentoring, infrastructure support and advanced training opportunities. Building on foundational scholarship in clinical reasoning, performance-based assessment, and assessment-for-learning, the Lab designs, studies, and implements scalable educational tools that integrate learning science, the philosophy of education, psychometric theory, and artificial intelligence to ensure society has the health professions workforce needed in the 21st century.

Led by Dr. Adina Kalet, the AHPEIS Lab advances integrated multimethod, and critical approaches to studying assessment and learning. Research spans simulation-based education, workplace-based assessment, ethical inquiry in education, program accreditation and AI-enabled feedback systems with particular emphasis on the development of interactive data visualizations and learner- and educator-facing dashboards. We are committed to co-producing- with students, teachers and society- tools that translate complex, multidimensional performance data into timely, interpretable, and actionable insights—supporting learners and self-directed learning, identifying strengths and growth areas, and providing educators with substantive program evaluation data.

Residing in the Department of Medical Education, the lab sponsors a monthly Works-in-Progress seminar and Medical Education Grand Rounds which are open to all members of the CUNY community. We maintain strong national and international networks of health professions education scholars so that we can bring cutting edge ideas to impact our mission
