Federal Direct Student Loans (Unsubsidized)
At the graduate/professional level, Federal Direct Student Loans are unsubsidized and available regardless of financial need. Interest accrues while you are enrolled in school.
Students can borrow up to the maximum amount for each academic year, which at the CUNY School of Medicine includes the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters. To remain eligible for financial aid, you must maintain at least half-time enrollment (6 credits per semester).
Federal Student Aid Process
Below is a step-by-step guide to applying for and receiving Federal Student Aid (FSA).
Step 1: Request Your FSA ID
Visit the U.S. Department of Education’s website to request your FSA ID. You’ll need this to electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Only complete this step if you don’t already have an FSA ID.
Step 2: Complete the FAFSA
Submit your 2026-2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool after October 1, 2025, and include the CUNY School of Medicine Title IV institution code: 002688.
Step 3: Review Your Student Aid Report (SAR)
After your FAFSA is processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education. Carefully review the SAR for accuracy and ensure our school code (002688) is listed. If additional information is required, it will be noted on the SAR.
Step 4: Estimated Award Letters
CUNY Medicine will send estimated financial aid award letters to all prospective students who have completed a FAFSA after October 1, 2025. Final award notifications will be available after matriculation.
Step 5: Set Up Your CUNYfirst Account
Once your seat deposit is received, you will gain access to your financial aid account through CUNYfirst. Here, you can check your “To-Do List” for any additional documentation needed to finalize your aid package.
- Review, accept, or decline your financial aid offers.
- Verify that your billing statement reflects all tuition and fees for your current enrollment status.
Step 6: Complete Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note
If you’ve accepted student loans, you may need to complete online Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at studentaid.gov. Check your “To-Do List” in CUNYfirst for any required actions.
Step 7: Set Up Direct Deposit
To expedite the disbursement of your loan funds, we strongly encourage students to sign up for Direct Deposit through CUNYfirst.
